2 weeks round trip - June 2023

This time we head directly north from Windhoek, over the Vingerklip into the Etosha National Park. Then on through the Caprivi Strip along the water landscapes of the Okavango and Zambezi with changing nature. It gets greener and warmer. Highlight: the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

Namibia as a travel destination

Namibia is easy to travel. The roads are often gravel tracks, but easy to drive on. There is great accommodation for every budget - from simple pitches to luxury lodges.

Crime hardly plays a role - especially outside Windhoek. The northern part of Namibia is a malaria area, but in June (winter) we were able to do without prophylaxis due to the cold night temperatures.

Kalahari

The Kalahari and the Kalahari Basin cover almost half of Namibia. It is very dry and dusty, but offers fascinating wildlife. Elephants, giraffes, various species of gazelle and the typical hornbill bird can often be seen.

Typical of the landscape in southern Africa is the camel thorn tree, whose roots reach down to the groundwater.

Caprivi Strip

The stretch of land along the Okavango and Zambezi rivers forms a stark contrast to the aridity of Namibia. In the evening hours, the animals go from the bush to the banks of the rivers to drink.

The name of the Caprivi Strip refers to the former German Chancellor and dates back to the colonial era.

Colonial era

Namibia was a German colonial territory between 1884 and 1915. Buildings from this period can still often be found, such as this old fort in Grootfontein. In the meantime, the German descendants and Namibia's other ethnic groups have settled down well.

Milky Way

The dryness and low population density offer a clear view of the Milky Way. With a night sky without the moon and an exposure time of 10 to 20 seconds, such images of the Milky Way are possible.

Spitzkoppe and Vingerklip

Namibia offers fascinating scenic sights. The Spitzkoppe (the “Matterhorn of Namibia”) is an example of this. The 35-metre-high rock needle of the Vingerklip is also impressive.

Victoria Falls

At 1,700 meters, the Zambezi is the widest waterfall in the world. It is located in the far west of Zimbabwe and is easily accessible from the eastern Caprivi Strip. The historic bridge leads to neighboring Zambia.
