3 weeks round trip - August 2024

We start in Johannesburg and drive directly to the border with Botswana. One of our first destinations is Kubu Island, a mystical elevation in the middle of the Makgadikgadi salt pans. This is followed by the Chobe National Park with its huge herds of elephants and the Okavango Delta, one of the largest inland deltas in the world. These are unforgettable safari experiences in one of the safest and most politically stable countries in Africa.

Botswana as a travel destination

Botswana is considered the safest and most stable country in Africa. Violent crimes against tourists are virtually unknown and special vaccinations are not required. As we were in the country in winter with cooler night temperatures, we did not need to take malaria prophylaxis.

The campsites are very basic and not fenced in. This means that wild animals come out at night. The roads are also challenging in places. The sandy tracks are impassable without four-wheel drive.

Protected areas in Botswana

Official national parks, game reserves and nature reserves make up around 17% of Botswana's land area. Chobe National Park is the best known and famous for its concentrations of animals. Due to the drought, the animals gather at the waterholes.

Diversity in the savannah

Botswana is characterized by the Kalahari. The savannah surprises with an incredible diversity of species.

Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta in the north-east of the country forms a clear contrast to the aridity of the Kalahari. At over 20,000 square kilometers, it is one of the largest and most biodiverse wetlands in Africa.

Baobab trees

The baobab tree is one of the best known and most characteristic tree in tropical Africa. Legend has it that witches planted these trees upside down in the ground.

The night sky

The dry air of the savannah and the low population density make for a fantastic view of the starry sky.

On the road in Botswana

The campsites are simple and not fenced in, which is why the sanitary facilities have to be protected from elephants. The roads often consist of simple sand tracks, so a four-wheel drive vehicle is essential.
