3 weeks round trip - December 2017

We visit three major cities: Ho Chi Minh City (9 million inhabitants), Phnom Penh (2.3 million inhabitants) and Bangkok (10.5 million inhabitants). The Mekong River takes you from Vietnam to Cambodia. The Buddhist country impresses with the gigantic temple complex of Angkor, dream beaches on Koh Rong and warm hospitality.

Cambodia as a travel destination

No special vaccinations are required for Cambodia. There are some warnings about crime (especially theft). However, we never felt unsafe - not even in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap.

Onward transport is well organized locally and can be booked through small travel agencies.

The temples of Angkor

In Angkor, the Khmer built countless temples over an area of more than 200 km2. The most famous, Angkor Wat, today adorns the coat of arms of Cambodia. You can spend days on this site and soak up the unique atmosphere.

Koh Rong

Koh Rong lies around 25 kilometers off the southern coast of Cambodia and is a real dream island. Palm-fringed, white sandy beaches, clear water and a relaxed backpacker atmosphere at the bars. There are still no luxury hotels with pools here, everything is kept very simple.

On the road in Cambodia

There is also plenty to discover away from the tourist hotspots. The country is very Buddhist - there are large and small temples everywhere.

Life on the water

Life takes place on the water. This applies to the Mekong as a trade route, but also to the Tonle Sap. On Cambodia's largest lake, houses are built on stilts as the water level rises sharply during the rainy season.

Phnom Penh

The capital of Cambodia is even more authentic than the metropolises in Thailand or Vietnam. You can visit the Royal Palace and enjoy the hustle and bustle of the night markets.

Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City is developing at a breathtaking pace, with glittering skyscrapers appearing as if in fast motion. Nevertheless, a certain exoticism remains, making the city a worthwhile destination.

Bangkok

At the end of the trip, we spend a few more days in Bangkok. Everything is well organized and runs smoothly. Perfect to relax a little more.
