2 weeks round trip - June 2022

We take a rental car in Johannesburg and start our round trip through the north of the Rainbow Nation. First, we drive the Panorama Route to the Blyde River Canyon. The famous Kruger National Park with its flora and fauna is the highlight of the trip.

South Africa as a travel destination

No special vaccinations are required for South Africa. The infrastructure is generally well developed, but often not well maintained. Power cuts are a regular occurrence and the roads are littered with potholes. However, a normal small car is sufficient - even for the national parks. A four-wheel drive vehicle is not necessary.

The high crime rate is indeed a problem in South Africa. This is especially true in large cities such as Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Certain precautionary measures must be observed.

Kruger National Park

Kruger National Park is one of the largest and best-known game reserves in the world. It is home to the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino). We didn't see any lions - but we were lucky with the leopard.

The Kruger National Park ecosystem

With its vast savannahs, dense forests and riverine landscapes, Kruger National Park provides a habitat for a wide variety of wildlife. The ecosystem includes over 500 bird species, 147 mammal species and numerous reptiles and amphibians.

The flora and fauna is fascinating. You have to make compromises at the state campsites.

African evening sun

The evening sun in the African savannah is a special experience. The landscape is bathed in a warm, golden light and the sky glows in intense colors.

Blyde River Canyon

The Blyde River Canyon is one of the largest green canyons in the world and impresses with spectacular rock formations, deep gorges and lush vegetation. It is the perfect setting for walks and short hikes.

On the road in South Africa

Away from the larger cities, you can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of South Africa. There is no crime like in Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban.
